The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR – Episode 020 [September 30, 2012]

By | The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR | No Comments

New York hip hop talk radioThe NY Hip Hop Report his the big 2-0, as hosts Manny Faces and Steve Ortiz once again spoke on several topics related to New York hip hop, but also hip hop music and culture in general. The BET Music Awards came up, particularly the unfortunately bad light shed on hip hop as a result of fights at the event. The conversation veered into a call for labels and media to start distancing themselves from the less artistic, occasionally ignorant aspects associated with rap music and move to advance more lyrical, artistic efforts, with caller KB agreeing that this is where hip hop has always needed to go.

The hosts, callers and chat room participants discussed the occasionally provocative question, “Who is the G.O.A.T.? (Greatest Of All Time)” in hip hop, and whether Jay-Z has any real competition for that title.

(A planned, and previously mentioned interview with Skyzoo was postponed due to a scheduling conflict.)

Lil Wayne doesn’t like New York. Big deal, we say, but many out in the real world and internets world say otherwise, including message board trolls, a State Senator and an underground artist, all who had extreme words for the YMCMB captain after his recent inflammatory comments. The NY Hip Hop Report with Manny Faces and Steven Ortiz, of Birthplace Magazine, tackled this thorny subject, as several New York-area callers joined the show to express their $.02 about the incident. Though time went fast due to the calls, we also gave a quick rundown of some items of interest from the past week, and some events of interest for the week ahead.

The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR – Episode 013 [August 12, 2012]

By | The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR | No Comments

On this episode of The NY Hip Hop Report with Manny Faces, we welcomed Wordspit (The Illest!), who, along with his band, recently ended an impressive run on the NBC variety competition series, America’s Got Talent. Winning over the judges and the crowd early in the series, Wordspit The Illest! made it through to the quarter-finals before being knocked off the show. We spoke with Wordspit as he and The Illest! took a break from studio work, to give us a little insight as to how the experience affected the long-time grinding Brooklyn MC, as well as to tell us what was next for him and The Illest!, including the possibility of them returning to the show as a judges wild card pick.

Of course as usual, Birthplace Magazine founder/EIC Manny Faces and Senior Staff Writer Steven Ortiz recapped some NY-area hip hop events, including the American Beatbox Championships, spoke on the Slaughterhouse concert that wasn’t, and asked a few interesting questions about Azealia Banks and Jim Jones’ beef, Swizz Beatz relevancy, Drake surpassing Jay-Z’s number one record record and the recent signing of Angel Haze.

And Manny Faces delved into one of his rants, taking GlobalGrind.com president Michael Skolnik (and site founder/owner Russell Simmons) to task for calling out MediaTakeOut for a lack of journalistic integrity, despite having been just as guilty in the past.

Take a listen, and be sure to sign up to the right —> to be included on our email list. Nothing crazy, just a friendly reminder-that-we’re-about-to-go-live email or two Sunday nights.

By | The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR | No Comments

The NY Hip Hop Report with Manny Faces, presented by Birthplace Magazine, continued Sunday, August 5, with our 12th episode. After a huge jump in archive listeners, the show is getting popular, both live and through listening through the archives.

Despite a brief glitch in communication in the show’s first segment, all went well afterwards as Manny and Senior Staff Writer Steven Ortiz spoke on the importance of keeping less-prominent aspects of hip hop music and culture alive, including graffiti, beatboxing, etc., speaking with Chesney Snow about the upcoming 3rd Annual American Beatbox Championships. A beatboxer from Germany checked in with a live call, and shared with us how strong the beatboxing culture is overseas, particularly in Germany.

The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR – Episode 011 [July 29, 2012]

By | The NY Hip Hop Report on BTR | No Comments

The NY Hip Hop Report with Manny Faces, presented by Birthplace Magazine, continued in full force Sunday, July 29, with our 11th episode. After a huge jump in archive listens for Episode 010, Manny and BirthplaceMag.com Senior Staff Writer Steven Ortiz welcomed a similarly large jump in live listeners this week, resulting in several phone calls from listeners who were happy to chime in on several topics, including telling us what “real hip hop” means to them, and whether or not Peter Rosenberg’s “Night of Real Hip Hop” concert fulfilled that ideal.

The great thing about The NY Hip Hop Report is that it just as entertaining listening to the recorded version as it is to check it live. So listen below, and join us LIVE next Sunday from 10p-11p.
