Hip hop music and culture turns 40 this year, and New York’s City Parks Foundation, organizers of the series, saw fit to pay tribute to this uniquely American, but worldwide phenomenon, which was birthed within its five boroughs.

As such, a featured subset of this year’s SummerStage series is the “This Is ___ Hip Hop” series, celebrating the diversity of the genre with shows dedicated to hip hop’s cultural legacy, like “This is Latin Hip Hop,” “This is Classic Hip-Hop,” “This is Family Hip-Hop” and “This is MY Hip-Hop.”

We’ll talk about all of the shows scheduled for the summer-long series, featuring New York hip hop icons like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Herc, Rock Steady Crew, Tego Calderon and many more, as well as buzzing up and comers like Flatbush Zombies and more.

First, we welcomed veteran artist and activist NYOIL to the show. LL Cool J’s controversial duet with country music’s Brad Paisley led NYOIL to respond in the old fashioned way, in the recording booth. NYOIL called it to discuss his position against the song and LL’s contribution. He also spoke on his continuing involvement in youth group/mentoring.

Soon thereafter, Queens’ Homeboy Sandman checked in. Homeboy Sandman recently penned a provocative look at buisness connections between the music business and the private prison industry, connecting some very interesting dots. Homeboy Sandman also spoke on his now-new release Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent, his latest album on the Stones Throw label.

Later in the show, Tru Statement Entertainment’s Baldi called in to recap the latest installment of their ongoing live band tribute series, Props to Hip Hop, giving some insight as to what’s next for the successful show series.

Before, during and after all of these intriguing guests, we did what we do: talk about New York hip hop issues, and welcomed calls from outr wonderful and engaged audience members.

This episode of The NY Hip Hop Report brought to you by Rabbi Darkside and his new album Prospect Avenue. This 17-track album includes production by Da Beatminerz, Nickodemus, Mista Mayday and Sid Suna and features by folks like Rob Swift, IllSpokinn and Homeboy Sandman. Come to Rabbi Darkside’s album release Friday, April 19 at Littlefield in Brooklyn, and check for Prospect Avenue on RabbiDarkside.com

The conversation stretched these topics, as well as a few tangents, including hip hop media connecting criminals and negativity to hip hop, something normally reserved for unknowing, uncaring media OUTSIDE of hip hop. Host Manny Faces made it clear his opinion that major hip hop media, including outlets like The Source, Vibe and even sites he normally praised like HipHopDX.com, are engaged in an active campaign against the very hip hop culture they cover.

#mediaassassin type stuff.

Toward the end of the show, the duo talked briefly about Peter Rosenberg’s (Hot 97) New York Renaissance mixtape, and whether or not they felt it properly represented the New York hip hop landscape.

Editor in Chief Manny Faces traveled to Lyon to witness the festival first hand, and, despite a 6-hour time difference, managed to host episode 047 of The NY Hip Hop Report live from his hotel room, at Lyon’s Mama Shelter.

Co-host Steve Ortiz, back in the Bronx, helped keep Manny focused despite being smack dab in the middle of his European adventure, asking all the right questions about how hip hop was being celebrated at L’Original Festival.

It was an interesting, fast-paced show, as Manny detailed many of the events he had already witnessed, as well as a little bit of the city life that he was able to discover during brief downtime.

An exciting show, as we welcome Bronx wordsmith YC The Cynic to the show. We’ve been showing love to YC The Cynic over on Birthplace Magazine for some time now, and he’s dropped several dope projects over the past couple of years. We noticed that he had recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for his next project, and we wanted find out more about it.

Aside from some opening banter about Yo! MTV Raps trading cards, show co-host Manny Faces announced the tentative (at the time, it has since been confirmed) plans to attend and cover the 10th annual L’Original Festival, going down from Thursday, March 28th to April 1 in beautiful Lyon, France! The Festival will include performances by artists from throughout the world, including some New York representation by folks like Skyzoo and Public Enemy.

Since we happen to know several New York artists who have traveled and toured throughout Europe, we called on one of them, Brooklyn’s Tah Phrum Duh Bush, to call in and tell us about his experiences in Lyon, and how the international hip hop community treats hip hop.

As the show ended, we delivered the latest song by YC The Cynic, “Hallelujah,” produced by DJ Illanoize.

As mentioned, The NY Hip Hop Report will be live next week, April 1, live from Lyon, France, reporting from the L’Original Festival.

Manny and Steve reviewed events from the prior week, including Big Daddy Kane’s Blue Note performance with The Lifted Crew and Show Tyme as Las Supper, his new musical mashup, blending classic soul and classic hip hop, as well as a one-on-one inteview event between radio host Sinnamon Love and the inimitable Jean Grae at MIST Harlem.
